John Fletcher Ankeny and Sarah Ankeny founded the town on April 22, 1875, on 80 acres bought the year before for $1,600. By 1881 it had seven houses, a church, a depot, a store and post office, a livery stable and a school, and the economy rested on sorghum and hogs. The railroad from Des Moines to Ames ran through it.
